Cummins KTA19 Marine Engine Parts – Raw Water Pump and Marine Cooling System Components

The Cummins KTA19 is a powerhouse of marine propulsion, relied on in tugboats, trawlers, dredgers, ferries, and offshore support vessels. With a robust 6-cylinder configuration, the KTA19 series delivers exceptional torque and reliability in the harshest marine environments. But to keep this diesel giant performing at peak levels, dependable cooling—especially seawater cooling—is essential. This is where raw water pumps, impellers, thermostats, gaskets, hoses, and strainers play a mission-critical role.

This section provides a complete overview of all raw water pump components and auxiliary marine cooling parts designed for the Cummins KTA19 engine platform. Whether you're outfitting a new installation or replacing worn parts, this comprehensive breakdown ensures the right fit and performance for your vessel.

Raw Water Pumps for Cummins KTA19

Marine Raw Water Pump – Flanged 2" Port, Heavy-Duty Model

At the core of any marine cooling system lies the raw water pump. The KTA19 uses a heavy-duty pump specifically designed to handle corrosive saltwater and high flow rates. This unit is engineered with a 2-inch flange port type to accommodate marine-standard plumbing, ensuring stable and secure connection under continuous vibration and high-pressure circulation.

Key features of this marine water pump include:

Compatible with all KTA19 marine models, including fixed-speed generator applications and propulsion engines
Flanged 2" ports for tight, leak-resistant fit in marine piping systems
Heavy-duty bronze and stainless steel construction for optimal corrosion resistance
High-output flow design to support intercoolers, heat exchangers, and engine jacket cooling
Rebuildable core assembly for long-term service life and reduced downtime

These pumps are typically driven mechanically from the front gear train or auxiliary drive shaft and operate in tandem with the engine’s internal coolant circulation to discharge heated seawater through the wet exhaust.

Bidirectional Marine Water Pump – Reversible Flow Capability

The bidirectional raw water pump is an excellent upgrade or replacement for operators needing flexibility in installation. Designed to turn either left or right, this pump suits both standard and custom marine engine configurations where access or mounting orientation may vary.

Advantages of the bidirectional pump for the KTA19 include:

Reversible rotation to accommodate port or starboard pump mounting
Same high-efficiency impeller performance as standard pumps
Corrosion-resistant cast bronze housing and stainless shaft
Used in KTA19 and QSK19 marine engine variants

Reversible marine water pumps reduce part stocking requirements for fleet operators and simplify repairs in confined engine rooms.

Raw Water Pump Impellers for KTA19

The impeller is the heart of the raw water pump, drawing seawater through the strainer and pushing it through the engine’s cooling circuits. For the Cummins KTA19, the impeller must withstand continuous rotation, debris-laden saltwater, and long intervals between maintenance cycles.

High-Performance Neoprene Impeller

The marine water pump impeller offered for the KTA19 is a high-durability unit molded from neoprene rubber, known for its:

Superior resistance to abrasion and seawater chemical exposure
Efficient water flow and reduced cavitation
Precision fit with keyed stainless-steel shaft
Rapid priming capabilities even at low RPM

A worn impeller can severely compromise engine cooling. Routine inspection and timely replacement of the impeller ensure your engine never runs hot due to reduced seawater flow.

Thermostats and Related Cooling Components

Cummins KTA19 Thermostats

Thermostats regulate internal coolant temperatures and ensure stable operation during varying load and environmental conditions. For marine KTA19 engines, the thermostat typically opens at 175°F, maintaining optimal engine temperature while balancing the heat exchanger load.

Features include:

Vented and non-vented designs for different coolant systems
High-temperature brass housing resistant to marine corrosion
Fast-acting thermal response to minimize overheating or cold operation

Always inspect the thermostat during a raw water pump service, as it plays a vital role in managing internal heat exchange.

Thermostat Seals and Gaskets for KTA19

When replacing a marine thermostat, a new gasket and seal are essential to prevent leaks. Marine vibration and saltwater exposure can deteriorate rubber and paper-based seals over time.

Seals are molded to OEM-spec rectangular or round profiles
Gaskets cut from marine-grade composite material for high-temp resistance
Simple bolt-on installation using factory mounting points

Failure to replace these small but critical components during thermostat servicing may lead to coolant leaks and temperature instability.

Zinc Anodes for KTA19 Marine Cooling Systems

Raw water pumps and heat exchangers on Cummins KTA19 engines rely on sacrificial zinc anodes to prevent corrosion. Zinc components dissolve over time, protecting the bronze, brass, and stainless steel internals from electrochemical degradation.

Heat Exchanger Zinc Anodes

Available in both 1/2" and 3/8" NPT plug sizes, these anodes are essential for:

Cummins heat exchangers
Fuel coolers
Oil coolers
Aftercoolers

Make zinc inspection and replacement a part of your regular maintenance routine. Worn or missing zincs can quickly lead to pitting, reduced heat transfer efficiency, or catastrophic failure of water-side components.

Marine Intake Water Strainers

Before raw water even reaches the pump, it must be filtered. Intake water strainers protect your impeller and internal cooling system by blocking weeds, silt, marine organisms, and debris.

Strainer Sizes for KTA19 Marine Installations

Strainers are available for:

1” to 2.5” pipe sizes to match your system’s water inlet size
Compact or high-capacity housings depending on vessel flow needs
Clear acrylic lids for visual inspection
Stainless steel screens for long service life

Choosing the right strainer size ensures optimal water flow and protects your engine from premature pump wear or clogged passages.

Silicone Coolant Hoses – Multiple Sizes

The KTA19 cooling system includes various coolant hoses that route heated and cooled water between the engine, pump, heat exchanger, and exhaust manifold. Diesel Pro Power offers a wide selection of:

High-performance silicone coolant hoses
Inside diameters from 1” to 4”
Resistant to oil, heat, pressure, and marine chemicals
Sold by the foot for custom-length installations

Silicone hoses last significantly longer than standard rubber hoses, reducing the likelihood of rupture or deterioration in high-vibration engine rooms.

Hose Clamps – Engineered for Marine Durability

Securing your coolant and raw water lines requires more than just standard clamps. Diesel Pro Power provides heavy-duty marine-grade hose clamps sized for:

9/16" up to 3" effective diameter
Constant tension and vibration resistance
Wide-band stainless construction

Using the right clamp ensures long-term leak-free operation, especially under fluctuating pressure and motion.

Impeller Puller Tool for Marine Water Pumps

Changing an impeller on a KTA19 raw water pump is not always easy, especially after thousands of hours of use. Diesel Pro Power offers a marine-grade impeller puller designed specifically for:

Tight clearances and confined engine compartments
Durable grip without damaging housing or shaft
Ease of impeller extraction on stubborn units

An impeller puller is a must-have tool for fleet mechanics and onboard maintenance crews looking to reduce downtime.

Why Raw Water Cooling Matters for KTA19 Engines

KTA19 engines generate substantial internal heat under load. While the internal coolant circulates through the block, the engine relies on raw seawater to dissipate this heat via heat exchangers and wet exhaust systems. If the raw water flow is interrupted, the entire engine cooling system can fail within minutes.

Proper maintenance and component selection of the following are vital:

Raw water pump
Impeller
Thermostats
Zinc anodes
Intake strainers
Silicone hoses and clamps
