Cylinder Heads & Related Components for Cummins N14

The Cummins N14 is one of the most recognized heavy-duty diesel engines in the industry, known for its strength, dependability, and performance in both on-road and off-road commercial applications. Whether you're operating heavy equipment, managing a commercial freight fleet, or performing a full engine overhaul, choosing the right cylinder head and related components is critical for optimal engine operation.

At Diesel Pro Power, we support 40,000+ satisfied customers globally with top-quality Cummins N14 engine parts—including expertly crafted cylinder heads, valve components, head gaskets, and associated hardware. Below, we provide a comprehensive breakdown of the parts needed for top-end service and cylinder head replacement on the N14 engine platform.

Complete Cylinder Head Assemblies for Cummins N14

We offer two main types of cylinder head assemblies for Cummins N14 engines:

1. Bare Cylinder Head (New)

This is a new casting that includes no valves, springs, or guides—ideal for engine builders or mechanics looking to re-use existing valve train components or source custom valve configurations. This bare head offers a clean foundation for a rebuild when your current head is cracked, warped, or otherwise irreparable.

2. Fully Assembled Cylinder Head (New)

The assembled head is preloaded with valve train components including valves, valve springs, and seals. Designed for CELECT systems (control electronics from Cummins), these heads are suitable for a wide range of N14 configurations, including CELECT 3, CELECT Plus, and CELECT Pro.

This plug-and-play style solution is ideal for field technicians and fleet managers seeking to minimize downtime. All critical components come pre-installed and bench-tested for fit and tolerance.

Valve Components for Cummins N14 Cylinder Heads

When servicing the N14 cylinder head or performing a top-end rebuild, it’s often necessary to replace key valve components to ensure optimal performance and emissions control. The N14 utilizes intake and exhaust valves seated at a 30-degree angle—a critical engineering detail to consider when sourcing replacements.

Intake Valves

These valves control the fresh air entry into the combustion chamber. They are precision-engineered to withstand high intake air pressure and resist pitting and wear over time.

Exhaust Valves

Exhaust valves are subject to extreme heat and pressure during the engine cycle. Replacement should be considered when there’s evidence of valve seat recession, warping, or poor sealing.

Valve Springs

Each cylinder head uses 24 valve springs in total (intake and exhaust combined). These springs are responsible for closing the valves at the right moment and controlling valve bounce at high RPMs. Replacing worn or fatigued springs helps maintain timing precision and compression integrity.

Valve Guides

Guides provide the physical track along which the valves travel. Over time, guides can become worn, leading to side play, oil consumption, and reduced compression. It’s best practice to replace guides whenever installing new valves or seats.

Valve Inserts (Seats)

Inserts help ensure a tight seal and provide a durable contact surface for the valve. These are commonly replaced during cylinder head rebuilds to restore factory-level performance.

Valve Seals

Steam seals prevent engine oil from entering the combustion chamber via the valve stem. Worn valve seals are a common cause of blue exhaust smoke and oil consumption.

Cylinder Head Bolts for N14 Engines

Cylinder head bolts are torque-to-yield fasteners that must be replaced any time a cylinder head is removed. The N14 engine typically requires 36 bolts to secure the head to the engine block. Using new bolts during reinstallation ensures proper clamping force and helps prevent head gasket failure or uneven torque load across the cylinder deck.

Gasket Sets and Head Gaskets

Upper Gasket Sets

Two upper gasket sets are available for the Cummins N14—one universal and one specific to CELECT configurations. These kits typically include:

Cylinder head gaskets
Valve cover gaskets
Intake and exhaust manifold gaskets
Turbocharger gaskets
Injector o-rings
Camshaft and rocker lever gaskets

Make sure to choose the correct gasket set based on your engine’s fuel and ECM configuration.

Head Gaskets

The head gasket creates a seal between the cylinder head and engine block, maintaining combustion pressure and preventing coolant or oil leaks. N14 head gaskets are built to withstand high combustion temperatures and pressures, ensuring reliable performance under heavy load conditions.

Always inspect the deck surface for warping before replacing the head gasket. Surface imperfections can cause sealing issues even with a new gasket.

Injector Tubes and O-Rings

The Cummins N14 utilizes removable injector tubes, which are critical for isolating the injector from coolant and combustion gases. These tubes must be sealed properly using fresh o-rings to prevent leaks, pressure loss, or contamination.

When replacing the cylinder head or servicing injectors, it is best practice to replace both the injector tubes and o-rings to ensure long-term reliability.

Push Rods and Valve Train Hardware

Proper valve timing and operation rely heavily on the push rods that connect the camshaft followers to the rocker arms. Over time, push rods can bend or develop wear patterns at the ends, affecting valve lift and duration.

For a complete valve train refresh, consider replacing:

Valve rocker push rods
Injector rocker push rods
Rocker arms (if showing signs of wear or galling)
Rocker lever cover gaskets

Each of these parts contributes to smoother valve actuation, better combustion, and reduced valvetrain noise.

Valve Rotators

Valve rotators or rotocoils help ensure even wear of the valve seat by gently rotating the valve during operation. If your N14 engine is used in a high-load environment, especially in marine or generator applications, replacing these rotators is recommended during a top-end rebuild.

Temperature Switches and Related Sensors

While not part of the cylinder head itself, temperature switches installed in or near the head play a vital role in engine safety. They help monitor coolant and oil temperature to avoid overheating and protect the head from thermal cracking.

Diesel Pro Power offers durable temperature switches designed for the N14 engine that close at factory-specified thresholds, helping to trigger alerts or shutoffs before overheating can cause permanent engine damage.

Common Symptoms of Cylinder Head Issues in Cummins N14

If you’re unsure whether your Cummins N14 needs a new cylinder head or just service components, here are some telltale signs of a failing cylinder head:

Coolant in the oil (milky oil) – May indicate a cracked head or blown gasket.
White smoke at startup – Often a sign of coolant leaking into the combustion chamber.
Overheating – Could result from internal cracks or poor coolant flow around the head.
Misfires – A cracked head can cause loss of compression in one or more cylinders.
Oil consumption – Worn valve guides or seals allow oil to seep into combustion chambers.
Visible cracks or warping – Detected during visual inspection or pressure testing.

If any of these symptoms are present, replacement of the cylinder head and associated parts may be necessary to restore performance and prevent further engine damage.

Professional Installation Tips

Always torque head bolts in the proper sequence and in multiple stages according to Cummins specifications.
Clean the deck surface thoroughly before installation.
Use assembly lube or clean engine oil on all valve guides, stems, and push rods before final assembly.
Replace valve seals and seats as part of any cylinder head overhaul.
When replacing just the head gasket, always measure for liner protrusion and head flatness.
Use calibrated tools to avoid over- or under-torquing fasteners.
