Piston Kits for Cummins N14 Engines

At Diesel Pro Power, we offer a complete selection of high-quality piston kits and related components for the Cummins N14 engine series. Known for its power and durability, the N14 is a workhorse engine used across a variety of heavy-duty applications including commercial trucks, marine propulsion, industrial machinery, and power generation systems. Whether you're performing a routine overhaul or addressing performance issues like oil blow-by or low compression, our N14 piston kits are engineered to deliver factory-level reliability with convenient, ready-to-install packaging.

Overview of Cummins N14 Piston Kit Configurations

Cummins N14 piston kits are available in several configurations based on compression ratio, piston design (two-piece vs. one-piece), and CPL (Control Parts List) number compatibility. At Diesel Pro Power, we stock piston kits compatible with hundreds of CPL numbers to ensure the right fit for your specific engine build. The standard design for most N14 pistons is a two-piece aluminum alloy body with a steel crown—offering both thermal durability and reduced friction.

Key Features:

Available with compression ratios commonly including 14.0:1 and 15.0:1 depending on CPL.
Manufactured using forged steel crowns for high strength under combustion loads.
Coated skirts to reduce cylinder wear and minimize piston slap.
Includes piston pin and piston pin retainers for full assembly.
Machined to OEM tolerances for drop-in fitment.

Piston Components in a Cummins N14 Kit

Each Cummins N14 piston kit includes all critical hardware necessary for installation and long-term operation. The following sections break down the major components.

Pistons

The pistons supplied in our kits are two-piece designs consisting of an aluminum body and forged steel crown. This hybrid design supports the high compression and heat loads the N14 engine endures, particularly in applications such as heavy hauling or marine propulsion.

Steel crown construction for strength under high-pressure conditions.
Aluminum skirt for improved heat dissipation and reduced friction.
Compatible with standard and high-performance ring packs.
Designed with oil gallery cooling when required by CPL.

Piston Pins

Every N14 piston kit includes a heavy-duty piston pin, machined to match the bushing dimensions of the connecting rod. The pin transfers combustion forces from the piston to the connecting rod, and must be hardened and precisely ground to ensure durability and smooth operation.

Induction-hardened steel construction.
Designed to match the bore tolerances of OEM connecting rods.
Compatible with full-floating and press-fit designs depending on CPL.

Piston Pin Retainers

Piston pin retainers, often referred to as “circlips,” prevent the piston pin from walking laterally into the cylinder wall. These small but critical components are included with each piston assembly.

High-tensile spring steel construction.
Snap-fit for reliable retention under repeated thermal cycling.

Cylinder Liners for Cummins N14 Engines

The piston operates inside a replaceable cylinder liner (or sleeve), which acts as the wear surface for the piston rings and a conduit for coolant flow. Diesel Pro Power offers standard and oversize liners to support rebuilds of both in-spec and worn blocks.

Standard Cylinder Liners

Our standard liners are precision-machined and honed to match original bore sizes.

Seamless bore finish for reduced ring break-in time.
Compatible with standard-size pistons.
Manufactured from cast iron for longevity.

Oversize Cylinder Liners

For engine blocks that have experienced bore wear or scoring, oversize liners (e.g., 0.020" or 0.040" over) allow for proper rebuilding without replacing the block.

Lower press-fit to accommodate wear compensation.
Requires machine-shop evaluation before installation.

Cylinder Liner Seals and Shims

Proper sealing of the liner-to-block interface is crucial for maintaining coolant integrity and cylinder pressure. Our kits include premium seals and optional shims for correct liner protrusion.

Liner O-Ring Seals

Each liner typically requires two O-rings per liner, ensuring a coolant-tight seal between the block and liner.

Heat- and coolant-resistant elastomers.
Compatible with N14 and NH855 block designs.

Liner Seal Rings

Also known as crevice seals, these fit beneath the liner to seal combustion gases and coolant at the liner base.

Durable elastomeric construction.
OEM-spec compression properties.

Liner Shims

Shims are used to adjust liner height to ensure correct protrusion above the block deck, ensuring proper head gasket crush and combustion sealing.

Available in multiple thicknesses: 0.0205", 0.0225", 0.031", 0.062"
Machined to flat tolerances to ensure no warping during torque.

Piston Rings for Cummins N14 Engines

The piston ring set is one of the most important components in achieving proper compression, oil control, and emissions performance. Diesel Pro Power supplies both standard and premium ring sets, with each set containing:

Compression rings: Maintain cylinder pressure during combustion.
Wiper rings: Scrape excess oil from the cylinder wall to reduce oil consumption.
Oil control rings: Maintain a proper oil film on the cylinder wall.

Available Options:

Standard ring sets for typical operating conditions.
Premium ring sets for extended wear resistance in high-load or high-mileage environments.

Piston Cooling Nozzles (Oil Squirters)

To manage piston crown temperatures, Cummins N14 engines use piston cooling nozzles—small jets that spray engine oil onto the bottom of the piston. These components are essential for thermal management and piston longevity.

Installed at the base of the cylinder.
Flow-matched for consistent oil delivery.
Compatible with all standard N14 blocks.

CPL Number Compatibility for N14 Pistons

Each N14 piston kit is designed to match specific CPL numbers. The CPL (Control Parts List) system is Cummins’ method of denoting internal engine configurations, including pistons, camshafts, fuel injectors, and more. Diesel Pro Power provides detailed compatibility listings to ensure each piston kit matches the bore size, compression ratio, ring land, and oil cooling requirements of your engine.

Common CPL Configurations Include:

CPL 1807, 1833, 2027, 2038
CPL 2590, 2390, 2861, 3359
CPL 3921, 8023, 8433, and many others.

Compression Ratios Available in N14 Piston Kits

Cummins N14 piston kits are typically available in the following compression ratios:

14.0:1 – Standard for many over-the-road applications, balancing power and fuel efficiency.
15.0:1 and higher – Used in higher-torque and performance variants of the N14.

Understanding your engine’s compression ratio is essential for choosing the correct piston and achieving intended power output and emissions compliance. Higher compression ratios increase efficiency but can raise combustion temperatures and cylinder pressures.
