When paired with new gaskets and properly torqued fasteners, your 14L turbo replacement ensures optimal sealing, airflow, and reliability.

Turbocharger Mounting Components

Proper installation of the turbocharger requires a combination of mounting studs, washers, and nuts that hold the assembly securely against high heat and vibration. The hardware not only supports physical alignment but also ensures there are no air or exhaust leaks at connection points.

Turbo Mounting Studs (44 mm & 50 mm)

Two variations are available for Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines:

1.5 x 44 mm Stud – ideal for standard turbo mounting applications.
1.5 x 50 mm Stud – designed for turbos requiring slightly longer engagement depth.

Both are made from heat-treated alloy steel, ensuring they retain tensile strength even under continuous high-temperature operation. These studs resist corrosion and stretching, maintaining proper torque and alignment during long engine cycles.

Turbo Mounting Nuts

These lock-type nuts are engineered to resist loosening caused by engine vibration or thermal expansion. Proper torque application prevents exhaust leaks and protects the turbo housing from damage caused by uneven clamping pressure.

Turbo Mounting Washers

The Detroit Diesel washer for turbo mount provides a flat, stable surface for torque transfer between the nut and the turbo flange. These washers are precision-machined for even load distribution and protection against galling.

When replacing or reinstalling the turbocharger, it is highly recommended to replace all associated hardware. Reusing old or heat-cycled fasteners increases the risk of thread fatigue and gasket failure.

Turbo Gasket Set – Ensuring a Leak-Free Seal

The Series 60 14L turbo system relies on high-temperature gaskets to seal the connection points between the turbo, exhaust manifold, and oil return lines.

Turbo Riser Gasket

Inner Width: 2"
Inner Length: 3.75"
Outer Width: 3.75"
Outer Length: 5.5"

This gasket seals the joint between the turbocharger and the exhaust riser or manifold, preventing exhaust gas leaks that could lead to performance losses and increased soot buildup. Constructed from high-temperature composite materials, it ensures longevity even in harsh thermal cycling.

Turbo Oil Return Gasket

Width: 3"
Length: 1.5"

This gasket seals the oil return flange where the turbo drains excess lubricating oil back into the crankcase. A secure oil return gasket is critical to preventing leaks that can damage both the turbocharger and surrounding engine components. Diesel Pro’s oil return gaskets are made with durable rubber-metal composites for superior oil resistance and flexibility.

Replacing both gaskets during turbo service ensures complete sealing integrity and prevents post-installation leaks.

Turbo Clamp for Detroit Diesel 14L

The turbo V-band clamp holds the compressor or turbine housings in place and secures connections between the turbo and exhaust piping.

Diameter: 5.75 inches (measured at the tightest point)
Material: Stainless steel for corrosion resistance and thermal stability

A robust turbo clamp ensures tight sealing under high boost pressure, preventing exhaust leaks and maintaining turbo efficiency. Diesel Pro’s clamp is precision-engineered to OEM dimensions and provides secure engagement without distorting flange geometry.

Installation Tips:

Always replace the V-band clamp when servicing or replacing a turbocharger.
Use even torque when tightening to prevent warping or misalignment.
Inspect for signs of corrosion or fatigue—any distortion can lead to exhaust gas leaks.

Turbo Air Pressure Sensor

The air pressure sensor, located near the turbo or intake manifold, monitors boost pressure and communicates data to the engine’s ECM (Electronic Control Module). This input helps regulate fuel delivery, preventing over-boost conditions and optimizing fuel efficiency.

Detroit Diesel Turbo Air Pressure Sensor Features:

Designed for accurate, real-time readings under high-pressure conditions
Resistant to heat, oil, and vibration
Compatible with all Detroit Diesel Series 60 14L configurations
Plug-and-play electrical connection for easy installation

Function in System Performance:
If the sensor malfunctions, the engine may experience:

Reduced power or erratic boost levels
Poor fuel economy
Check engine light (CEL) or fault codes related to turbo performance

Replacing a worn sensor restores communication between the turbo and ECM, ensuring efficient air-fuel ratio control.

Understanding Turbocharger Operation

The turbocharger works through a dual-chamber design:

Turbine side: Driven by exhaust gases, spinning the turbine wheel
Compressor side: Draws in and compresses intake air before sending it to the cylinders

The balance between exhaust flow and compressor boost is critical. The Series 60 14L’s turbo was engineered to handle high torque loads while maintaining precise air pressure, ensuring steady boost curves across RPM ranges.

Proper lubrication and cooling are essential. Oil from the engine circulates through the turbo bearings, and coolant (in water-cooled models) prevents excessive temperature buildup. Neglecting oil quality or filter maintenance can lead to bearing failure or shaft imbalance.

Turbocharger Maintenance Tips for Series 60 14L

Routine inspection and proactive replacement of turbo components can significantly extend the engine’s life.

Recommended Maintenance Schedule:

Every 12 months or 100,000 miles: Inspect turbocharger for shaft play, oil leaks, and boost pressure consistency.
Every oil change: Verify oil feed and return lines are free from restrictions.
Every major overhaul: Replace all turbo gaskets, clamps, and mounting hardware.

Common Signs of Turbo Wear:

Whining or whistling noises during acceleration
Excessive black or blue smoke
Reduced boost or sluggish performance
Oil in the intercooler or intake tract

Addressing these issues promptly prevents cascading failures affecting pistons, valves, and injectors.

Installation Guidance & Best Practices

When replacing a turbo on the Series 60 14L:

Drain engine oil to prevent contamination during disassembly.
Clean all mating surfaces to remove old gasket material and carbon buildup.
Replace all gaskets and seals—never reuse old ones.
Torque all fasteners evenly to manufacturer specifications.
Prime the turbo with clean engine oil before startup to prevent dry bearing rotation.
Start the engine and idle for 3–5 minutes to allow oil circulation before loading.

Following these steps ensures the new turbo operates efficiently and achieves its designed lifespan.

Additional Components for Turbo System Longevity

While the main turbo assembly is the centerpiece, supporting parts play an equally important role in maintaining performance:

Oil feed lines: Supply consistent lubrication to bearings.
Exhaust manifolds: Direct gases efficiently to the turbine.
Intercoolers: Lower the intake air temperature, increasing density and power output.
Boost hoses and clamps: Prevent leaks that reduce turbo efficiency.

Routine inspection and timely replacement of these parts safeguard against premature turbo wear and engine inefficiencies.
